TThe “Les Métiers du Temps | Time Arts (MTTA)” project is now recognized by the Swiss Confederation as a research infrastructure of national importance. A grant of CHF 1.6 million will be awarded over four years to this project led by MICROCITY, with the involvement of numerous stakeholders in the watchmaking industry. This is a decisive step for innovation and for promoting the watchmaking heritage of Switzerland and Neuchâtel.

The Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research (DEFR) has awarded the “Les Métiers du Temps | Time Arts (MTTA)” project a grant of CHF 1.6 million. Awarded for a four-year period (2025–2028), this significant funding confirms MTTA’s status as a research infrastructure of national importance, pursuant to Article 15, paragraph 3, letter c of the Federal Act on the Promotion of Research and Innovation (LERI),

Major watchmaking groups, as well as research and development institutes, subcontractors, and representatives of the artisan trades, have joined this project led by MICROCTIY, thereby underscoring the importance of its unique position within the artisan trades for watchmaking and fine jewelry. Convinced that this initiative will strengthen and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Swiss watchmaking ecosystem’s leadership and distinctiveness, the Neuchâtel cantonal government has provided financial support for this project since its launch.

This funding will help strengthen research and training in the watchmaking trades, develop partnerships with academic institutions and innovative companies, and preserve and pass on valuable expertise, while incorporating the latest technological advances.

A unique blend of tradition and cutting-edge technology

The MTTA project will combine industrial heritage and innovation by bringing together large, small, and medium-sized enterprises, startups, and research institutions within a single collaborative ecosystem. Starting in 2028, MTTA will move into the “HDV7” building located at 7 Rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville in Le Locle, a space conceived by MICROCITY and designed to foster synergies between academia and industry. This new dynamic environment will foster innovation and applied research and strengthen close collaboration with all stakeholders in the watchmaking industry, HE-ARC, and the Neuchâtel Vocational Training Center (CPNE).

Thanks to this grant, MTTA will continue to play a central role in promoting technical and watchmaking expertise, thereby contributing to the vitality and excellence of the region and Switzerland.
