Funded by the European H2020 program, the PeroCUBE project aims to develop flexible, lightweight electronic products based on perovskite, with the goal of opening up new commercial opportunities in the lighting, energy, and telecommunications sectors.

Fourteen industrial and academic partners from 10 European countries are part of a consortium coordinated by CSEM.
Already used in photovoltaic (PV) applications, perovskite also has properties that could enable it to capture the market for large-area organic electronics (OLAE). The PeroCUBE project also represents a new milestone for CSEM, which—in addition to its existing PV activities—will focus for the first time on perovskite-based light-emitting devices.
PeroCUBE has two main objectives: to produce efficient, simple, and inexpensive light sources that more closely resemble natural light, and to contribute to the development of more stable and cost-effective solar panels. By combining these two promising technologies, PeroCUBE aims to set a new standard for visible light communication (VLC) and LiFi (Light Fidelity) technology, expanding their scope of application to human-centered lighting (HCL), data transmission, wearables (portable electronic devices), and Internet of Things (IoT) applications that are harmless to both people and the environment.

Paving the Way for the LED and PV Industries

According to Sylvain Nicolay, head of the “coating” division at CSEM, the project will mark another milestone in the development of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices:

PeroCUBE aims to create large-area lighting panels (PeLEDs) that offer a smart lighting system in line with a holistic approach to lighting; such devices outperform OLED display technology in terms of cost-effectiveness and help maintain the European lighting industry’s leading position.

Sylvain Nicolay adds that this will open up new opportunities for manufacturers:

PeroCUBE will demonstrate that perovskite materials can indeed be used to manufacture commercial products such as lighting panels and portable electronic devices.

A European consortium comprising 14 partners

Coordinated by CSEM, the project consortium will be able to draw on the highly specialized expertise of its various partners in the commercialization of lighting devices and new communication systems (LiFi). This innovative form of collaboration brings together the entire value chain, ranging from industry representatives to universities and applied research centers. Furthermore, it provides the essential foundation for the development of a new generation
of perovskite-based electronic devices. Already regarded as a symbol of a promising new direction for the energy sector, this European consortium will demonstrate the viability of the technology as a commercial product. The project will last 42 months, with a total requested contribution from the EU of 5.6 million euros.
Alpes Lasers is the second Swiss partner in the consortium involved in the European project. This company is working on the laser source:
